Job Description

The Automation Control Technician installs, configures, and maintains instrumentation, electrical systems, and PLC-based control hardware that support complex test and manufacturing operations. This role focuses on building and troubleshooting intricate cable assemblies, control panels, and data acquisition systems while ensuring high-quality workmanship and adherence to industry standards in a fast-paced aerospace environment.

Responsibilities

  • Install and terminate wiring for pad instrumentation and data acquisition systems to support test and operational activities.
  • Install connectors, connector pins, terminals, and lugs with precision to ensure reliable electrical connections.
  • Install and modify electrical conveyances, including conduit and cable tray, to route and protect cables and wiring.
  • Install cable and cable assemblies for power, control, and data transmission across test and manufacturing systems.
  • Build intricate and complex cable assemblies using Mil-C connectors and contacts in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Troubleshoot AC power distribution equipment and perform terminations to ensure safe and reliable power delivery.
  • Terminate, troubleshoot, and maintain PLC-based manufacturing and control hardware to support automated operations.
  • Fabricate support structures, enclosures, and conveyances for electrical distribution equipment and control systems.
  • Assist in developing and documenting procedures related to instrumentation, wiring, and electrical assembly work.
  • Perform quality inspection on harnesses and cables to ensure compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
  • Use hand and power tools safely and effectively to assemble, install, and maintain electrical and control equipment.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to complete installations and modifications.
  • Support testing activities by ensuring instrumentation such as pressure transducers, thermocouples, valves, and flow meters are correctly installed and functioning.
  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and other team members to diagnose issues, implement solutions, and improve systems.

Essential Skills

  • Associate degree in aerospace technology or another technical field.
  • 2+ years of experience working with instrumentation such as pressure transducers, thermocouples, valves, flow meters, multimeters, or oscilloscopes.
  • 2+ years of professional, hands-on experience working with launch site instrumentation.
  • Experience with ISO 9000, IPC-620, and IPC-610 standards.
  • Quality inspection experience with harnessing and cables.
  • Understanding of basic direct current (DC) electrical theory.
  • Ability to design and fabricate simple electrical circuits.
  • PLC and data acquisition (DAQ) programming experience.
  • Experience with NI software and Studio 5000.
  • Proficiency with Siemens PLCs.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and electrical schematics.
  • Experience with PLC troubleshooting, HMI, and controls engineering concepts.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • General physical fitness and physical dexterity to work in tight quarters.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 25 lbs unassisted.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights up to 300 ft with proper PPE.
  • Ability to work in extreme environments, including heat, cold, rain, fumes, odors, and noise.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience building and wiring control panels and electrical panels.
  • Experience with robotics, pneumatics, and automated systems.
  • Experience in design using tools such as AutoCAD.
  • Experience in quality assurance and QC for electrical and control systems.
  • Experience helping to develop and document technical procedures and work instructions.
  • Proficient use of power tools such as hand drills, grinders, band saws, vacuums, and impact drivers.
  • Proficient use of hand tools such as wire strippers, screwdrivers, brooms, flush cuts, and wrenches.
  • Experience working with HMIs and integrating them into control systems.
  • Exposure to schematic design and review for electrical and control circuits.

Work Environment

This role operates in both indoor and outdoor environments, supporting test and operational areas that may involve exposure to heat, cold, rain, fumes, odors, and noise. Work often takes place in tight quarters and at elevated heights up to 300 ft, using appropriate PPE and following strict safety procedures. The schedule typically follows daytime hours, around 6:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with additional hours as needed to support testing and operational demands, including extended hours and weekends. The work involves frequent use of hand tools and power tools, as well as interaction with PLCs, data acquisition systems, instrumentation, and control panels in an active test and manufacturing setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of McGregor, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $38.00/hr.
